My LinkedIn Journey

In February, I had the privilege of speaking about my experience with LinkedIn at the NIO Innovation Summit in Cancun, Mexico.

If you’re reading this page, you probably found it from LinkedIn. For the last few years, I’ve been highly active on this platform, posting content on a regular basis. I’ve done this in order to understand the true power of the LinkedIn network as it relates to building a personal brand. Here’s the short version of my story…

I created my LinkedIn account in April of 2007. Why? Because that’s what business professionals were supposed to do. I uploaded a profile pic, filled out my title and connected with a few colleagues. For the next decade, I rarely logged on to the site unless I was searching to hire someone for my team.

Why did I rarely visit LinkedIn? Because the content on the site was SO LAME! 🥱🥱

But when Microsoft purchased LinkedIn back in 2016, I started to pay closer attention. I noticed a handful of people who were actually posting really interesting, engaging content. Over time, I realized these people were establishing their own personal brand using the network. So, I decided to give it a try.

Fast forward a few years later, and I’ve made over 850 posts that have racked up 5 million views and 28,000 followers. It’s been a wild ride!

I also created my own hashtag that I brand on most of my posts: #LIAppropriate. Here’s the story behind it. I created another hashtag to promote the amazing work of the #DucksUnlimitedDigital team. Here’s the story behind that.

So, what’s the purpose of this page? It’s to challenge YOU to be more active on LinkedIn. If you put the time into sharing GOOD content, your network will grow and you’ll be amazed at how much you will learn.

Building a Brand on LinkedIn

There’s a big difference between a having a LinkedIn profile page and having a LinkedIn brand.

FACT: More than 90% of LinkedIn users create a profile and never post content or engage with the newsfeed. Essentially, they’re invisible to the LinkedIn community. Those people have a page – not a brand.

In fact, less than 1% of people on LinkedIn post content on a weekly basis. That means that 3 million people are generating 9 billion impressions each week!

I’ve been highly active on LinkedIn since 2016, posting more than 850 pieces of content that have generated nearly 5 million views. Through my content marketing efforts, I’ve established a network of nearly 27,000 followers.
